Jack and Sara's Summer Road Trip: Final Installment

2014-09-24

Jack and Sara, the newly engaged college sweethearts we've been tracking during their romantic summer road trip, have had quite an eventful adventure. When we last checked in, they were recovering from having crashed their car into their host's garage in New Orleans, from the unfortunate theft of Sara's fancy camera from their Nashville motel room, and from Jack's debilitating bout of food poisoning. What additional surprises might the road have in store for our lovebirds?

A Scare in the Southwest

In Four Corners, an enchanting locale in the Southwest where New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona all meet, Jack and Sara wander around the many booths where Native American artisans display their handmade jewelry. Dazzled by the displays of shining silver, Sara begins trying on rings. Her favorite style is a simple band with a hammered texture.

"I think we should get a pair of these for our wedding bands," she tells Jack, who likes the idea.

Sara temporarily removes her new engagement ring from her ring finger in order to try one of the silver bands on for size, but somehow, in all the excitement of choosing, paying, and talking to the Navajo artist who created the silver jewelry, she forgets to put the engagement ring back on.

She and Jack wander around the other booths for a few minutes before she realizes her mistake.

"Oh, no!" she cries. "My ring!"

four cornersFour Corners is teeming with tourists at this time of year. What if someone has already come along and snatched up the sparkler? As they race back to the booth where she left it behind, Jack soothes Sara: "The good news," he reminds her, "is that we added a rider to our renter's insurance to cover your engagement ring, so if is really is gone for good, we'll be able to get a new one."

Even better news? The Navajo artist at that booth has spotted the forgotten ring, put it safely in his pocket, and is in the process of looking for Jack and Sara to return it when they bump into him. "You left this," he says, handing her the solitaire.

"Some people really are good!" Jack declares.

A Fiasco with their car

Temperatures are soaring in the desert, and the used car Jack and Sara bought at the start of their trip is showing signs of strain. As they head west through the arid landscape toward California, with visions of the Hollywood sign in their heads, Jack and Sara notice the car start to become alarmingly sluggish, then noisy, then... BANG! Before they know it, the poor little old car has thrown a rod bearing, and the engine is effectively shot. They can't drive another foot.

After summoning a tow truck with her cell phone, Sara laments the fact that their liability auto insurance policy certainly won't cover the cost of repairs, which is bound to be exorbitant. "Let's just sell this jalopy to a junkyard for the parts, take the money, and buy plane tickets to Los Angeles!" Jack agrees.

Lost Luggage in the City of Angels

The pair is smart to opt for flight insurance when they buy their tickets to LAX, because the airline loses their luggage, and they are without any necessities when they deplane. Fortunately, the insurance will reimburse them for the cost of the replacement items they buy during a shopping spree on Melrose Avenue.

Another day spent exploring Venice Beach, the Hollywood Hills, and Pasadena leaves Jack and Sara pleasantly spent. During the final night of their road trip, the pair is tucked away with a bottle of champagne in their hotel room overlooking the sparkling lights and speeding convertibles of Sunset Boulevard. Tomorrow, they'll hop on a plane back home to New York.

Lifting his glass, Jack muses warmly, "Sara, if we can make it through a trip like this one, I have no doubt we'll make it through a lifetime of marriage to each other." With a kiss, they conclude this adventure - the first of what will be many more.
