Speeding:

  • National data reported by Fortune magazine determined that a 10-mph speed increase ups the risk of a crash by more than 9 percent.
  • According to TeenSafe, more than 50 percent of the 5,000,000 car crashes in the U.S. each year are caused by aggressive drivers, with speeding being the most prevalent contributor.
  • In 2019, the Insurance Information Institute reported that speed-related crashes cost Americans $40.4 billion each year.

Teen Drivers:

  • In 2018, the NHTSA reported that drivers between the ages of 15 to 20 had the highest rate of speed-related fatalities compared to other age groups.
  • According to DriveTeam, teenage crashes most often involve left-hand turns, rear-end accidents, and running off the road.
  • The Oregon Department of Transportation reported that those without driver education between the ages of 15 to 20 are responsible for 91% of teen driving accidents.
  • According to TeenSafe, when a teenage driver has an additional passenger, they are twice as likely to get into a fatal car crash. When two or more passengers are present, they are five times more likely.
  • Speed was a factor in 31 percent of U.S. teen driver fatalities.

Driving Under the Influence:

  • Three in five people will be involved in a crash due to impaired driving in their lifetime, says a report by the National Center for Statistics and Analysis.
  • When drivers are impaired by drugs or alcohol, they are 36 times more likely to crash, reports the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute.
  • The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that, while alcohol is the substance most linked to impaired driving, marijuana is the second.

Texting:

  • A report by Driver Knowledge says that one out of three people text while driving.
  • Texting while driving increases the risk of crashing by 23 times.
  • TeenSafe reports that at least 11 teens die in crashes caused by texting and driving every day.
